The Works of Mike P. Nelson

Mike P. Nelson works independently and commercially as a director and producer. He currently works as Head of Film Production at MAKE in Minneapolis, MN. Whether he is shooting, editing, directing, or producing; working on a feature or putting together a commercial, Mike’s focus remains creating imaginative, stylized, story driven work. By night he is a ravenous independent filmmaker churning out the dark, the weird, and the insatiably tasty movie.

Back a few months ago my wife and I wrote and directed a spot for Dunder Mifflin Paper for Quill.com. The spot was done for a Tongal contest. We ended up winning 4th place with a $2000 prize which was rad, but the real pay off-

“This commercial will air in the Dunder Mifflin branch cities of Buffalo, Albany, Utica, Scranton, Akron, Camden and Nashua the night on The Office series finale.”

That is a quote right from Quill. Yes our ad will be airing during the finale of The Office. Today just got insanely wicked.

Started with a book cover shoot for a local author self publishing her first novel. Set in 1962, the book is about a romantic relationship between a teacher and a student. Thanks to wonderful art direction from my wife Katie Maren Nelson and our stunning talent Maddy, the shoot went without a hitch. Also thanks to Jennifer Nielsen for producing the shoot and making it happen. I’ll post the cover once it’s finished. Below is a little glimpse of the space we created.

Sunday we started early with a miniature shoot for the one man band Hastings 3000. Again, another smooth shoot. Over the last couple weeks I had been working on carving a giant floating rock structure out of foam. Then we went “all out 70’s miniature shoot!” My wife and I were contacted by local director/DP Patrick Pierson to add the finishing effect touches to the video he directed for Hastings 3000. Click the link for a quick behind the scenes clip of the shoot. Special thanks to my wife for helping me plan this and making it so cool, my DP Nick Junkersfeld, Eric Pierson, Patrick Pierson, Chris Hadland and Token Media. And thanks to Joe of Hastings 3000 for the beers!

This is my first personal film in several years.
